UWCL: Erin Cuthbert earns Chelsea slender Champions League advantage over Barcelona

Chelsea secured a remarkable 1-0 victory against Barcelona in the Women's Champions League semi-final first leg thanks to Erin Cuthbert's excellent goal, under the guidance of Emma Hayes.

Chelsea executed a superb defensive display at the Olympic Stadium to defeat a Barcelona team vying for their third trophy in four seasons.

Jonatan Giraldez's squad, who triumphed over Chelsea in the 2021 final and narrowly won in last season's semis, faced their first home loss in over five years, leaving them frustrated.

Emma Hayes aims to conclude her tenure with Chelsea on a high note before transitioning to the US women's national team, securing her first Champions League victory as a coach.

Despite recent setbacks in the FA Cup and League Cup final, Chelsea's pursuit of a quadruple has faltered in recent weeks, while Barcelona's hopes remain alive but were dampened by Cuthbert's impressive goal.

Hayes' tactical strategy was executed flawlessly as Chelsea limited Barcelona's typically dominant attack to very few opportunities while posing a threat on the counter.

Having never defeated Barcelona before, Chelsea adopted a defensive approach with three center-backs and a resilient mindset.

They absorbed Barcelona's pressure without allowing the two-time champions to create many dangerous chances.

Although Salma Paralluelo had a glimpse of goal, her shot was deflected over, and Ballon d'Or winner Aitana Bonmati was effectively neutralized.

Chelsea then surprised the hosts by capitalizing on their first significant attacking sequence just five minutes before halftime.

Sjoeke Nusken maneuvered skillfully in the box, finding Cuthbert, who created space before curling a shot past Cata Coll.

Barcelona emerged strongly in the second half and believed they had earned a penalty when Kadeisha Buchanan handled Patri Guijarro's shot.

Referee Stephanie Frappart reviewed the incident via VAR and controversially ruled that the offside Paralluelo was interfering with play, just behind Buchanan.

Barcelona, who have reached the semi-finals for six consecutive seasons, called upon Alexia Putellas, a two-time Ballon d'Or winner, from the bench in an attempt to dismantle Chelsea's defense.

At the opposite end, Mayra Ramirez appealed for a penalty after being brought down by Irene Paredes, and then missed a great opportunity to score Chelsea's second goal by shooting over the crossbar. With five minutes remaining, Paralluelo's volley went wide as Chelsea remained resolute despite mounting pressure.

In the dying moments of the match, Putellas had a golden opportunity to equalize but missed the target from close range after receiving a headed pass from a free-kick inside the box.

Barcelona supporters endeavored to motivate their team for the second leg at Stamford Bridge on April 27th by chanting "Yes we can" at the conclusion of the match.
