UWCL: Wolfsburg cruise past Roma to advance; Lyon, Chelsea win

Wolfsburg achieved a resounding 6-1 victory over Roma in the Women's Champions League on Wednesday, securing their advancement to the quarter-finals, while eight-time champions Lyon delivered a decisive defeat to Galatasaray.
Sveindis Jonsdottir netted four goals in the last 25 minutes, enabling Wolfsburg to claim second place in Group A, three points ahead of Roma, and to hold a superior head-to-head record against the Italian side.
"I am extremely happy and proud that we have progressed," stated Wolfsburg forward Alexandra Popp.
"We complicated matters for ourselves with the outcome of the match in Rome. However, to perform like this... I am just incredibly proud."
In their initial encounter, Roma triumphed 1-0 against Wolfsburg in Italy, but the two-time champions now possess a better record following their significant home victory.
Wolfsburg's next challenge will be against group leaders Lyon in the final round of group-stage matches on December 17, although the match will have no implications for the standings.
The French team has maintained a flawless record with five victories from five matches, following their 6-0 rout of the last-placed Galatasaray, and they lead the group by six points.
In Germany, Popp opened the scoring for Wolfsburg early in the match, but Valentina Giacinti equalized shortly after the interval. Lineth Beerensteyn restored Wolfsburg's lead before Jonsdottir's remarkable four-goal performance sealed the victory.
The Icelandic forward entered the match as a substitute in the 66th minute and scored her first goal just two minutes later, followed by three additional goals in the final five minutes, bringing Wolfsburg's total points to nine.
"I will have all the girls sign this match ball – I am really happy! This is a moment I will likely never forget," remarked Jonsdottir.
In Istanbul, Lyon showcased their dominance with six different players finding the net at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium. Ada Hegerberg and Sara Daebritz scored within the first 30 minutes, followed by an own goal from Jazmin Jackmon that made it 3-0 by halftime. Captain Wendie Renard, Danielle van de Donk, and Eugenie Le Sommer added to the tally in the second half.
Le Sommer's goal in the 76th minute marked a significant achievement for the 35-year-old, as it represented her 50th goal in the Champions League.
"It is premature to declare ourselves as the favorites for the cups at this stage of the season, but we are certainly making commendable progress," stated Lyon coach Joe Montemurro on UEFA's website.
"We have had a strong start to the season; however, the key is to sustain this momentum."
In Group B, both Chelsea and Real Madrid, who have already secured qualification, emerged victorious, setting the stage for an exciting final group match next week, which will determine the group winner.
The English champions will head to Madrid on December 17, holding a three-point lead after their 3-2 victory over Real in their initial encounter.
Chelsea continued their perfect record on Wednesday, achieving a resounding 6-1 victory against the Dutch side Twente.
Meanwhile, Madrid secured their position with a 3-0 win against Celtic, highlighted by a brace from Danish forward Signe Bruun and a late header from Alba Redondo.
