Valentin Vacherot seeks Paris Masters Wildcard after stunning Shanghai triumph

Fresh off his sensational victory in Shanghai, Valentin Vacherot has officially requested a wildcard entry for the upcoming Paris Masters, hoping to continue his incredible late-season surge on home soil.

The 26-year-old Monegasque, who stunned the tennis world by defeating his cousin Arthur Rinderknech to claim the Shanghai Masters title, was also granted a wildcard for the ATP Basel tournament, set to run from October 20–26.

From World No. 204 to Masters Champion

Just a few weeks ago, Vacherot was virtually unknown to many tennis fans. Ranked No. 204 at the start of the Shanghai tournament, he pulled off one of the sport’s biggest shocks of the year by capturing an ATP 1000 title — the first of his career and the first by a player ranked outside the top 200.

His Shanghai win has catapulted him to No. 40 in the ATP rankings, marking one of the fastest rises in modern tennis history.

“Two weeks ago, not many people knew him,” said Cedric Pioline, tournament director of the Paris Masters and a former world No. 5. “But now he’s a name that resonates — someone who’s made an incredible leap and deserves recognition.”

Wildcard Hunt for Paris Masters

Vacherot’s late surge came too late for automatic entry into the main draw of either Basel or Paris, as both participant lists had already been finalized. However, his recent success has placed him firmly in contention for one of the four available wildcards for the Paris Masters, which begins October 27.

Pioline confirmed that Vacherot’s wildcard request has been received and is under consideration. Interestingly, Rinderknech — his opponent in the Shanghai final — will also require an invitation to participate in Paris.

The Road Ahead

Because Vacherot’s ranking was outside the cutoff when entries closed, he cannot automatically qualify for the main draws in Basel or Paris. His Shanghai win, however, has changed the equation, and the wildcard route now looks likely.

Pioline also noted that Arthur Rinderknech, Vacherot’s runner-up in Shanghai, will need an invitation to play in Paris as well.

In total, the French Tennis Federation (FFT) will distribute four wildcards for the main draw and another four for the qualifiers, set for October 25–26.

Whether Vacherot’s remarkable momentum will continue in Europe remains to be seen, but one thing is certain — tennis fans will be eager to watch one of the season’s most unexpected breakout stars take the court again.
