Valkyries make franchise history with first WNBA win over Mystics

The Golden State Valkyries made history on Wednesday night, securing the first win in franchise history with a thrilling 76-74 victory over the Washington Mystics at Chase Center. In just their second WNBA game ever, the expansion team showed heart, hustle, and heroics in front of a sold-out, high-energy crowd.
Veronica Burton was the undeniable star of the night, scoring a team-high 22 points along with 9 rebounds and 5 assists. Burton nailed a clutch 3-pointer with 1:38 remaining, then calmly drained another deep shot with just 29 seconds left to seal the win. Her performance ignited the Chase Center, with Golden State Warriors guard Brandin Podziemski dancing courtside as fans erupted in celebration.
Kayla Thornton added 18 points, including a pivotal four-point play with 1:03 left that swung momentum back to the Valkyries after Mystics guard Brittney Sykes — who finished with a game-high 30 points — gave Washington a narrow lead.
Despite losing veteran guard Tiffany Hayes to a nose injury late in the first half after a collision with Shakira Austin, the Valkyries held their composure. Hayes gave a thumbs up as she was helped off the floor, but did not return.
A Stephen Curry-esque halftime buzzer-beater from Burton gave the Valkyries a 31-30 edge at the break. Rookie Janelle Salaun, fresh off an Italian League title and Finals MVP honors, made her WNBA debut count with 10 points and a critical late-game rebound. Her 3-pointer — the team’s first after 17 missed attempts from beyond the arc — sparked a second-quarter comeback.
The Valkyries shot just 7-of-37 from 3-point range, but made their biggest shots when it mattered most.
