Valtteri Bottas 'waiting for the go-ahead' as his F1 future remains uncertain

Valtteri Bottas acknowledged the possibility of being absent from Formula 1 next season, yet expressed his confidence in the new Sauber team principal, Mattia Binotto, to favor him over younger competitors.
The 35-year-old Finnish driver, who has secured ten race victories with Mercedes before his transition to the Swiss-based Sauber team, informed reporters at the US Grand Prix on Thursday that he was still awaiting a decision that he had anticipated would be made by this time.
"Currently, there is nothing I can do; the situation is beyond my control. My focus is on delivering my best performance this weekend, hoping it will positively influence the outcome," he stated.
Sauber faces the decision of whether to retain two seasoned drivers or to introduce a young talent as the team prepares to evolve into the factory Audi team starting in 2026.
They have already signed German veteran Nico Hulkenberg from Haas and have one seat available, with Bottas currently holding that position but competing against younger talents such as Mick Schumacher, F2 leader Gabriel Bortoleto, and Franco Colapinto.
"I am aware of the conditions I am under and am essentially waiting for the go-ahead," Bottas remarked, indicating that financial considerations were not a concern.
"I choose to remain optimistic because I genuinely believe I deserve that seat. I feel I would be the best fit for the team's interests."
Bottas recognized the challenge of demonstrating his capabilities to a broader audience while driving for a team that has yet to score any points this season.
"I prefer not to be labeled as 'frustrated,' as that is a strong term, but it is indeed challenging," he commented.
"When the car is not competitive, it becomes exceedingly difficult to showcase one's abilities. Additionally, decision-makers in large organizations often prioritize results.
"At this moment, it is not easy to stand out, so I must place my trust in Mattia. He understands what I can deliver."
Binotto, who previously served as the principal at Ferrari, assumed leadership in August.
