Van Nistelrooy honoured to serve as Manchester United's interim manager

Ruud van Nistelrooy expressed his sadness regarding the dismissal of Erik ten Hag from Manchester United on Monday. However, the former striker of the club feels privileged to assume the role of interim manager for as long as necessary.

The Dutch coach, Ten Hag, was relieved of his duties on Monday as the team found itself in a disappointing 14th place in the Premier League standings.

Van Nistelrooy joined Ten Hag's coaching staff as an assistant in July and was appointed interim manager on Monday, set to lead the team in the League Cup match against Leicester City at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

"Erik ten Hag welcomed me back to Manchester United this summer, and although I have only been part of the coaching team for a few months, I will always be thankful to him for this opportunity, and I am disheartened by his departure," stated the former Netherlands international on the club's website.

"My return as Erik's assistant was driven by my belief that Manchester United can regain the heights I experienced as a player here.

"I maintain that belief, though it will require time and considerable effort.

"Even in an interim capacity, it is a tremendous honor to manage the club I cherish for as long as I am needed. I assure you that I will dedicate myself fully, in any role, to help improve our situation."

While Van Nistelrooy was seen as a potential candidate for the permanent managerial position, Sporting's Ruben Amorim has emerged as the leading contender, with Manchester United informing the Lisbon-based club on Tuesday of their willingness to activate the 10 million euros release clause.
