Vancouver Canucks sign Marcus Pettersson to six-year extension worth $33 million

The Vancouver Canucks have officially extended Marcus Pettersson's contract for six years, valued at $33 million, as announced on Wednesday.

This new agreement features an average annual value of $5.5 million, set to commence in the upcoming season. Pettersson was concluding the final year of his previous five-year contract, which was worth slightly over $20 million.

“In just a couple of games, Marcus has already shown us the type of leadership, poise and character that we want in a top-four defenseman,” said Vancouver general manager Patrik Allvin. "He has a calming influence on the ice, uses his long reach and hockey smarts to break up plays and has a good first pass to help us create more offensively.

We are extremely happy to get this deal done and look forward to working with him in both the short term and long term.”

The eight-year NHL veteran was recently acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins in a trade that also included Drew O'Connor.

This season, Pettersson has recorded three goals and 15 assists, although he has yet to score with Vancouver after participating in only two games.

As the Canucks aim to enhance their current record of 24-18-11 and pursue a playoff berth this season, Pettersson is expected to become a key player for the team moving forward.

Additionally, the Canucks made significant news in the NHL by trading J.T. Miller to the New York Rangers in a major deal, acquiring Filip Chytil (25), Victor Mancini (22), and a top-13 protected first-round draft pick for the 2025 NHL Draft in return.
