Venus Williams receives wildcard for 2025 Indian Wells tournament

Tennis icon Venus Williams has been granted a wildcard entry into the 2024 Indian Wells tournament, giving the former world number one another shot at competing in the prestigious WTA 1000 event. The 44-year-old American will make her 10th appearance at the tournament, where she has previously reached the semi-finals three times, most recently in 2018.
Williams' history with Indian Wells is deeply personal. She and her sister, Serena Williams, boycotted the event for 15 years after their family endured racist abuse from fans during Serena’s 2001 final victory over Kim Clijsters. Venus had withdrawn from their scheduled semi-final that year due to injury, a decision that was met with boos and jeers from the crowd. She eventually made her return to the tournament in 2016 and also played as a wildcard in last year’s edition.
On the men's side, rising stars Joao Fonseca and Learner Tien have also been awarded wildcards. Fonseca, an 18-year-old from Brazil, is coming off his first ATP title win at the Argentina Open, while 19-year-old American Tien made headlines last month by becoming the youngest player to reach the Australian Open fourth round since Rafael Nadal in 2005.
As Indian Wells approaches, Williams’ return adds another layer of excitement to an already star-studded event, where legends and emerging talents will clash on one of the sport’s biggest stages.
