Verreynne Century Puts South Africa in Command Against Bangladesh

Kyle Verreynne’s resolute century propelled South Africa into a commanding position on Day 2 of the first Test against Bangladesh at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. His gritty knock of 114 lifted South Africa from a precarious overnight score of 140-6 to a first-innings total of 308, giving the visitors a crucial 202-run lead.
At stumps, Bangladesh were 101-3 in their second innings, trailing by 101 runs. Their recovery was led by opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy, who remained unbeaten on 38, and veteran Mushfiqur Rahim, who will resume on 31. The pair shared an unbroken 42-run partnership, stabilizing the innings after a disastrous start.
Bangladesh had been rattled early by South Africa’s pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada, who struck twice in his second over, reducing the hosts to 4-2. Rabada, who reached the milestone of 300 Test wickets on Day 1, had earlier helped dismiss Bangladesh for just 106 runs after they opted to bat first.
Earlier in the day, Verreynne and allrounder Wiaan Mulder resumed their overnight partnership and steadily took South Africa’s score from 140-6 to 227-7, before Mulder fell for 54, his maiden Test half-century. Mulder edged a delivery from Hasan Mahmud, who had been reintroduced into the attack after Bangladesh’s spinners struggled to break the partnership.
Verreynne then added 66 runs for the ninth wicket alongside Dane Piedt, who contributed 32 runs. Verreynne’s second Test century came off 134 balls, displaying a mix of patience and aggression. His innings ended when he was stumped off a clever slower delivery from Mehidy Hasan Miraz.
For Bangladesh, left-arm spinner Taijul Islam was the standout bowler, finishing with figures of 5-122 from 36 overs. However, he failed to make a breakthrough on Day 2 as the Proteas extended their lead.
With South Africa in control, Bangladesh faces a tough task to claw their way back into the contest. The Dhaka Test is the first in a two-match series, with the second Test scheduled to take place in Chittagong next week.
