Verstappen says swearing penalty could hasten his Formula 1 exit

Max Verstappen (26) indicated that he might consider leaving Formula One sooner than anticipated if the sport's governing body restricts his ability to enjoy himself and express his true self.

The Red Bull triple world champion was mandated by stewards to engage in "public interest work" with the FIA following his use of profanity during a press conference at the Singapore Grand Prix last Thursday.

Describing the penalty as 'super-silly' on Sunday, the Dutch driver responded with brief answers in FIA press conferences and chose to interact with reporters in a more informal setting within the paddock.

After finishing second in the race behind McLaren's Lando Norris, he reiterated his strong feelings regarding the penalty.

"Such matters certainly influence my future," he stated. "When you are unable to be yourself or must contend with these trivial issues, it becomes problematic.

"I believe I have reached a point in my career where I prefer not to be burdened by these concerns constantly.

"While achieving success and winning races is rewarding, once you have attained those milestones, it is essential to also enjoy the experience."

Verstappen has previously mentioned the possibility of retiring from Formula One at a relatively young age, noting that he does not intend to continue as long as drivers like Lewis Hamilton, 39, and Fernando Alonso, 43.

"If I must navigate through these trivial matters, that is certainly not a sustainable way for me to remain in the sport," he remarked.

When asked if the FIA might reconsider their stance if they were made aware that they risked losing a multiple world champion, Verstappen expressed skepticism about their seriousness in such a scenario.

"For me, there will come a point when enough is enough. We will see how it unfolds. As I mentioned, racing will continue," he added.

"Formula One will persist even in my absence. That is not an issue for me."

Verstappen conveyed a sense of being hindered in his ability to be genuine.

He stated, "If you are unable to express your true self completely, it is preferable to remain silent. No one desires that outcome, as it leads to a robotic existence, which is not the appropriate approach in the realm of sports."
