Vertonghen announces International Football retirement after Euro 2024

Belgium's most capped international Jan Vertonghen (37) announced his retirement from international football after earning 157 caps.

In a brief statement shared on social media, Vertonghen expressed gratitude for the memories and stated that he had fulfilled his dream.

Vertonghen began his international career in 2007 at the age of 20 during a European Championship qualifier against Portugal, which Belgium lost 2-1.

Throughout his career, he served as an occasional captain and participated in multiple major tournaments, including the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Vertonghen also played in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where Belgium exited early.

Despite his recent own goal in the European Championships against France, Vertonghen has been a key player for Belgium.

As he looks towards the future, Vertonghen's club career remains uncertain following the expiration of his contract with Anderlecht last month.

He has previously played for RKC Waalwijk, Ajax, Tottenham Hotspur, and Benfica.
