Victor Osimhen’s brace sends Galatasaray past Mourinho’s Fenerbahce in Turkish Cup

Galatasaray secured a crucial 2-1 victory over fierce rivals Fenerbahce in a heated Turkish Cup quarter-final clash at the Saracoglu Spor Kompleksi on Wednesday night. Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen was the hero of the night, netting both goals to propel the Yellow and Reds into the semi-finals while sending Jose Mourinho’s side crashing out of the competition.

Osimhen’s decisive double

Osimhen wasted no time in making an impact, finding the back of the net just 10 minutes into the game after a precise setup from Baris Yilmaz. The former Napoli forward displayed his striking prowess once again in the 27th minute, confidently converting a penalty to double Galatasaray’s lead and put his team firmly in control.

Despite Galatasaray’s early dominance, Fenerbahce fought back and managed to pull one goal back just before halftime, courtesy of Sebastian Szymański’s well-placed finish in the 45+1 minute. However, Mourinho’s men were unable to break down Galatasaray’s resilient defense in the second half.

Mourinho’s frustration as Galatasaray holds firm

The game grew increasingly tense in the closing stages, with Mourinho making tactical changes in search of an equalizer. However, his efforts proved futile as Galatasaray stood firm, effectively neutralizing Fenerbahce’s attacking threats. Osimhen, who had been booked in the 85th minute, was substituted four minutes from time, making way for Alvaro Morata to see out the win.

Galatasaray’s dominance continues

Osimhen’s stellar performance has now taken his season tally to 27 goals and five assists in 32 appearances, cementing his reputation as a key player for Galatasaray. The victory not only secures their place in the semi-finals but also strengthens their dominance in Turkish football, as they continue to sit six points clear at the top of the Turkish Super Lig standings.

What’s next?

With the Turkish Cup semi-finals on the horizon, Galatasaray will await their next opponent, while Fenerbahce must now shift their focus back to league competition. Meanwhile, Mourinho, who has been vocal about refereeing controversies in Turkey, will have to regroup his squad as they aim to bounce back from yet another setback.
