Viktor Gyokeres transfer news: Arsenal close to signing Gyokeres in £55m deal from Sporting CP

Arsenal are on the verge of completing a major summer signing, with a deal for Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres nearing total agreement. The Gunners are expected to pay a £55 million (€63.5m) fixed fee to Sporting CP, with an additional £8.6 million (€10m) in potential performance-based add-ons still being negotiated. The deal marks a significant breakthrough for Arsenal, who have identified the 27-year-old forward as their top transfer target this window. Talks accelerated after Gyökeres’ agent agreed to waive a commission fee, a move that helped lower Arsenal’s cost without reducing Sporting's financial gain.
Arsenal finally land their Striker target
Mikel Arteta’s side had previously explored a move for RB Leipzig's Benjamin Šeško, but shifted their focus after the Slovenian opted to remain in Germany. Arsenal also faced competition from Manchester United, who reportedly made an initial approach for Gyökeres last month.
However, Sporting held firm on their valuation, with club president Frederico Varandas denying claims of a gentleman's agreement allowing Gyökeres to leave for £59m. Now, with negotiations nearly finalized, Gyökeres looks set for a return to the Premier League.
Gyökeres by the Numbers: A Goal Machine
Since joining Sporting from Coventry City for £20 million in 2023, Gyökeres has produced incredible numbers:
- 97 goals in 102 appearances across all competitions
- 54 goals in 52 games last season alone
- 11 goals in 17 European matches, including a Champions League hat-trick vs Manchester City
- Helped Sporting win both the Primeira Liga and Portuguese Cup
His meteoric rise has seen his market value soar. Once worth under £1 million in 2021, Transfermarkt now values Gyökeres at £64.8 million, nearly tripling in just two years.
A Return to England
A move to Arsenal would mark a return to English football for Gyökeres, who previously played for Brighton & Hove Albion. After loan spells at St Pauli, Swansea City, and Coventry, he joined the latter permanently in 2021. He scored 43 goals in 116 appearances for the Sky Blues before sealing his switch to Sporting.
Now 27, Gyökeres is entering his prime and looks ready to take on the Premier League challenge once again, this time as a central figure in Arsenal’s pursuit of domestic and European glory.
Arsenal’s busy summer rebuild
Gyökeres’ anticipated arrival is just one piece of a significant summer rebuild at the Emirates:
- Martin Zubimendi joined from Real Sociedad for £51m
- Christian Nørgaard signed from Brentford for £15m
- Goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga arrived from Chelsea for £5m
- A deal worth £52m for Noni Madueke, also from Chelsea, is nearly complete
The addition of Gyökeres could give Arsenal the attacking edge they need to mount a serious title challenge and compete deep in the UEFA Champions League next season.
