Viktoria Plzen 1-2 Manchester United: Super-sub Hojlund bags brace as Red Devils come back to defeat hosts

Manchester United overcame an early deficit to secure a 2-1 victory against Viktoria Plzeň, achieving their third consecutive win in the UEFA Europa League (UEL).
This triumph also marked their first away victory in Europe in 20 months and the first instance since the 2013/14 season that they have commenced a European campaign with six unbeaten matches.
The match unfolded under frigid conditions, with Plzeň historically unable to secure a win against English teams, while United had previously struggled in their away encounters in the Czech Republic.
In the initial fifteen minutes, Ruben Amorim’s team controlled the game, although they failed to pose a significant threat to the Plzeň goal. Joshua Zirkzee demonstrated impressive strength as he maneuvered into the box, but his final pass was deflected out of play.
As the match progressed, the home team, energized by the vibrant atmosphere at the Doosan Arena, began to assert themselves. However, Amorim’s squad remained dangerous on the counterattack, primarily through the speed of Amad Diallo and Marcus Rashford.
The first notable attempt on goal occurred shortly after the half-hour mark when Bruno Fernandes advanced the ball from deep within United's half and unleashed a long-range shot that Martin Jedlička managed to deflect away.
Despite dominating possession with over 70% in the first half, the Red Devils could not convert this advantage into goals, and the teams went into halftime with a score of 0-0.
Amorim likely expected a more vigorous performance from his players after the break, but he was left frustrated when his team conceded a goal just three minutes into the second half.
The nature of the goal was particularly vexing, as Andre Onana, under no pressure, inexplicably passed the ball directly to Pavel Sulc at the edge of the box. Sulc then set up Matej Vydra, who scored his first goal in six matches against Manchester United.
Clearly dissatisfied with the start of the second half, Amorim made three substitutions before the hour mark.
Rasmus Hojlund, one of the substitutes introduced, immediately posed a threat upon his entry, breaking through on goal, although his weak attempt was saved by Jedlicka. However, the Danish striker found the net in the 62nd minute, converting a rebound after an Amad shot deflected into his path.
The conclusion of the match was marked by a frantic pace as United sought a winning goal, advancing numerous players forward.
This aggressive approach, however, created vulnerabilities in their defense, which Plzen sought to exploit but ultimately could not take advantage of.
Just when it seemed that an away victory was slipping away, the Red Devils persisted in their efforts, and Hojlund secured the crucial second goal in the 88th minute, demonstrating remarkable composure in the box to score from a swiftly taken free-kick by Fernandes.
This goal proved decisive, ending United's seven-match winless streak away from home, a result that Amorim will hope can energize his tenure as they head into the Manchester derby this weekend.
