Villarreal 1-2 Real Betis: 10-man Betis hold on to defeat hosts

A valiant 10-man Real Betis maintained their composure to secure an impressive 2-1 victory over Villarreal at the Estadio de la Ceramica, marking their first win in six LaLiga encounters.

Marcelino’s Villarreal approached the match without a win in their last three league outings, while Real Betis, encouraged by a three-match unbeaten run, aimed to achieve a third consecutive away victory.

Although the hosts, spearheaded by Gerard Moreno, began the match brightly, it was the Verdiblancos who struck first. A swift offensive maneuver down the left flank culminated in Abde Ezzalzouli delivering a precise cross, which Vitor Roque expertly converted with a header at the far post.

The momentum shifted just before half-time when Chimy Avila received a straight red card for a controversial sliding tackle on Alex Baena. With a numerical advantage, Villarreal intensified their pressure on the visitors but found it challenging to penetrate before the interval.

Spectators were treated to an unexpected turn of events immediately after the break, as Manuel Pellegrini’s side extended their lead with a magnificent free-kick from former Villarreal player Giovani Lo Celso.

His perfectly executed strike into the top-right corner stunned the home crowd, and with a subtle gesture, he chose not to celebrate in the stadium that was once his home.

Villarreal quickly responded, as Baena capitalized on a loose header at the far post, skillfully controlling it before delivering a delightful finish into the right corner.

Betis right-back Youssouf Sabaly then emerged as a hero for the visitors, making a remarkable clearance off the goal line to thwart Thierno Barny’s close-range header.

Despite a series of substitutions in the final fifteen minutes, neither team could change the result, as Betis held on to secure a significant away victory, extending Villarreal’s winless streak to four consecutive home matches.

This defeat in the league represents only the second loss for the Yellow Submarine in their last eleven home games, with their previous home defeat occurring against Barcelona in September.
