Villarreal 2-2 Girona: Girona comeback from two down to rescue point away at Villarreal

In the early LaLiga match, Villarreal relinquished a 2-0 advantage, ultimately settling for a 2-2 draw against Girona at the Estadio de la Ceramica. This result allowed the visitors to avoid suffering their seventh defeat in eight encounters between the two teams.

The day’s LaLiga action commenced energetically, with Girona creating the first significant opportunity. In the second minute, Bryan Gil aimed for the bottom-right corner, but Diego Conde was quick to deny him.

Villarreal responded promptly, and soon Conde was outperformed by Paulo Gazzaniga at the opposite end, as the former Spurs goalkeeper saved a low header from Logan Costa.

Continuing to press forward, Villarreal finally broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute. A long pass to the left flank enabled Sergi Cardona and Alex Baena to work together, setting up Yeremy Pino for a header on goal.

Villarreal appeared poised to secure the victory, but a twist occurred as the match approached the three-quarter mark. Conde managed to punch away an inswinging corner, but a wild shot from Donny van de Beek deflected off Cardona and found the net, reducing the visitors' deficit. This match marked the 12th occasion in Villarreal's last 14 games where both teams managed to score.

Girona recognized the momentum shifting in their favor, and Cristhian Stuani narrowly missed scoring late in the match when he shot just over the crossbar after the ball came to him swiftly, as Villarreal began to exhibit signs of anxiety.

Denis Suárez had the opportunity to secure the victory when he advanced towards the goal and took a low shot, but it was directed too close to Gazzaniga. Following a disallowed goal by Stuani for a marginal offside in the dying moments of regular time, the sixth of eight added minutes witnessed Girona deliver a crushing blow to Villarreal. Stuani headed the ball back to the edge of the box, allowing Ladislav Krejci to volley it past an unsighted Conde.

This result marked the first draw in LaLiga history between these two teams after nine encounters, leaving Villarreal at risk of being matched on points by Athletic Bilbao later in the day.
