WAFCON 2024: Nigeria defeat Botswana to secure Quarterfinal spot

The Super Falcons of Nigeria are the first team to qualify for the WAFCON 2024 quarterfinals, thanks to a dramatic 89th-minute winner by Chinwendu Ihezuo that sealed a hard-fought 1-0 win over Botswana in their second Group B fixture.
Ihezuo’s late strike came after a tense, physical contest in which Botswana showed remarkable resilience. With the clock winding down, it was substitute Esther Okoronkwo who made the difference, surging down the right flank and delivering a precise low cross that found fellow substitute Ihezuo sliding in to steer the ball past Sedilame Boseja, Botswana's impressive shot-stopper.
The result keeps Nigeria’s 100% record intact and takes them to six points from two matches, enough to guarantee a top-two finish and safe passage into the knockout stage of the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2024.
Super Falcons show grit to grind out win
Despite being overwhelming favorites and nine-time WAFCON champions, Nigeria were made to work for their victory by a stubborn Botswana side.
The Mares, who reached the quarter-finals in their 2022 debut, nearly stunned the Super Falcons early on. Star forward Refilwe Tholakele forced a strong save from Nigeria’s goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie in the sixth minute, a wake-up call for the West Africans.
Nigeria responded with efforts from Ashleigh Plumptre and Toni Payne, but their attempts lacked precision in the first half. After the break, Plumptre again came close, unleashing a thunderous long-range shot that was superbly tipped over by Boseja.
With time running out, Nigeria pushed forward relentlessly. Boseja denied Jennifer Echegini with a world-class save in the 80th minute, but her resistance was finally broken in the dying moments, sending the Nigerian bench and their fans in Casablanca into a frenzy.
Group B Standings: Nigeria Top, Algeria await CAF verdict
Earlier in the day, Algeria and Tunisia played out a goalless draw, a result that saw Algeria move to four points, while Tunisia earned their first point of the tournament. Botswana remain pointless and now face a must-win clash against Tunisia in their final group match to keep slim hopes of qualification alive.
However, Group B’s situation has taken a twist. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced it has launched an investigation into alleged violations of tournament rules by the Algerian FA. No specific details have been revealed, and CAF has stated that no further comment will be made until the review is concluded.
Depending on the outcome, the final standings in the group could yet be altered.

With their quarter-final ticket secured, Nigeria will face Algeria in their final group match on Sunday at 19:00 GMT. The fixture provides a chance for head coach Randy Waldrum to rotate his squad and fine-tune tactics ahead of the knockouts.
Botswana, meanwhile, must defeat Tunisia to have any hope of reaching the last eight as one of the best third-placed teams, a path they successfully navigated in the 2022 WAFCON.
CAF increases Prize Money of TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (“WAFCON”) Morocco 2024, Winner by 100% and Total Prize Money by 45%
The victory not only extends Nigeria’s unbeaten start but underlines their reputation as WAFCON heavyweights. After dispatching Tunisia 3-0 in their opener, the narrow win against Botswana highlights the team's versatility — blending flair with grit when necessary.
Chinwendu Ihezuo’s winner, though late, may go down as a defining moment of Nigeria’s 2024 campaign. It also emphasizes the Super Falcons’ impressive squad depth, with substitutes making decisive contributions under pressure.
