Washington Commanders fire Ron Rivera after four seasons

Rivera's tenure as head coach of the Commanders has come to an end following a disappointing 4-13 season. Over his four-year stint, Rivera accumulated a record of 26-40-1 and managed to secure one playoff appearance, which occurred in 2020 when the team won the NFC East with a 7-9 record.

The decision to part ways with Rivera was made by the new owner of the Commanders, Josh Harris, who waited until the day after Rivera's 62nd birthday to make the expected move.

Harris also revealed that he has enlisted the help of two experienced individuals in the search for a new coach and head of football operations.

Former Golden State Warriors executive Bob Myers, who led the team to four NBA championships, will play a key role in identifying and conducting interviews with potential candidates.

Myers, who has a longstanding relationship with Harris, is known for his innovation, connections across sports, and ability to build successful organizations.

Additionally, former Minnesota Vikings general manager Rick Spielman has been brought on board to assist with the search process. Spielman, who has over 30 years of front office experience, previously served as the Vikings' GM from 2012 to 2021 and held the same position with the Dolphins in 2004.

Commanders owner Josh Harris emphasized the importance of this offseason in rebuilding a winning culture within the organization.

He expressed confidence in Myers' ability to contribute significantly to this endeavor, given his track record of constructing championship teams and establishing sustainable infrastructure.

While Myers takes on this new role, he will also continue his duties as a studio and game analyst for ESPN.

As for the current Commanders GM Martin Mayhew and executive VP of player personnel Marty Hurney, their long-term futures will be determined by the new hires during the search process.
