Welsh penalty ends Sweden's flawless UEFA Nations League run

A penalty awarded in the second half allowed the Wales women's team to thwart Sweden women's bid for a sixth consecutive victory, resulting in a 1-1 draw at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground during the 2025 UEFA Women's Nations League.
Following their 2-1 triumph over Denmark in Odense on the opening matchday of Group A4, the fifth-ranked team in the world began the match with confidence, taking the lead within the first 15 minutes.
A well-executed play on the left flank created an opportunity for Matilda Vinberg, who delivered a dangerous cross into the penalty area, compelling Welsh goalkeeper Olivia Clark to deflect the ball into a perilous position.
The ball landed at the feet of Filippa Angeldal, who capitalized on the opportunity with a close-range finish, as Clark was unable to recover in time.
However, Sweden's hopes of extending their lead were thwarted, as they encountered resistance from the hosts during a first half that saw no further shots on target.
Sweden intensified their efforts early in the second half, yet they struggled to convert their dominance into clear scoring opportunities against the 30th-ranked team in the world.
In the final 20 minutes, Peter Gerhardsson's squad came closest to securing a second goal when Rebecka Blomqvist set up Stina Blackstenius, whose shot struck the post.
In front of their home supporters, Wales capitalized on a mistake by Emma Kullberg, who handled the ball in the box five minutes later.
Kayleigh Barton took the responsibility for the Dragons, confidently converting the penalty by driving the ball down the middle into the top of the net, leaving goalkeeper Jennifer Falk with no chance.
Neither team managed to find a late winner, resulting in Sweden accumulating four points in the group after two matches. Denmark's 3-1 victory over Italy places both teams on three points, while Wales remains at the bottom of Group A4 with one point.
