Wembanyama scores 15 points in NBA debut as Spurs fall to Mavericks

Victor Wembanyama, the highly touted French prodigy, had an eventful NBA debut with the San Antonio Spurs, contributing 15 points to the team's effort. However, Luka Doncic's impressive triple-double performance for the Dallas Mavericks overshadowed Wembanyama's start, resulting in a 126-119 victory for the Mavericks.

Wembanyama, the top pick in this year's NBA Draft, faced foul trouble in the second half but managed to make 6-of-9 shots from the field, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. He also grabbed five rebounds, dished out two assists, recorded two steals, and blocked a shot during his 23 minutes on the court in his inaugural NBA game.

Reflecting on his debut, Wembanyama expressed his emotions, saying, "It was a lot of emotion. It would have been perfect to win.

Tonight really marks the beginning. It's still a dream, I hope to keep that dream feeling."On the opposing side, Slovenian guard Luka Doncic displayed his brilliance with 33 points, 14 rebounds, and 10 assists for the Mavericks. He played a pivotal role in securing the win by scoring the last eight points for his team.

Doncic attributed their success to their defense, stating, "It all starts with our defence. We played good defence for three quarters but especially at the end, we locked in."Wembanyama, often compared to top NBA prospects like LeBron James, utilized his impressive 7-foot-4 frame, surprising quickness, and outside shooting skills to showcase his talent in his rookie debut. He acknowledged his performance and looked forward to what's next, saying, "I was happy. It's representative. This in itself is not exceptional. But I hope what I do next will make it special.

"Despite facing early foul trouble, Wembanyama returned to the game with determination, contributing with an alley-oop dunk, a crucial 3-pointer, and a dunk that briefly gave the Spurs a lead. However, the Mavericks proved too tough down the stretch.

As Wembanyama continues to make an impact in the NBA, he and the Spurs are eager for their upcoming games. Wembanyama mentioned, "We're hungry already for the next game."In his NBA debut, Wembanyama quickly earned the crowd's support by blocking a shot from the eight-time NBA All-Star, Kyrie Irving, within the first 38 seconds of the game. He also secured his first rebound and assist shortly after.

Wembanyama opened his NBA scoring account with a three-pointer, contributing to the Spurs' early lead in the first quarter.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich had high praise for the young talent, saying, "Fortunately for us, he's a very tooled, prioritized young man. I don't have to teach him what it is to be a pro."In other NBA season openers, Jayson Tatum led Boston to a 108-104 victory over New York with 34 points and 11 rebounds, while Kristaps Porzingis made an impressive debut for the Celtics with 30 points.

Sacramento's Harrison Barnes powered his team to a 130-114 win over Utah with 33 points, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's 31 points propelled Oklahoma City to a 124-104 victory against Chicago.

Donovan Mitchell's clutch 3-pointer secured a 114-113 win for Cleveland against Brooklyn, with both Mitchell and Max Strus contributing 27 points for the Cavaliers.

In a closely contested game, Miami narrowly defeated Detroit 103-102, led by Bam Adebayo's 22 points and 19 from Jimmy Butler.

Finally, C.J. McCollum and Zion Williamson combined forces to lead New Orleans to a 111-104 victory over Memphis, with McCollum scoring 24 points and Williamson adding 23 to their tally.
