West Ham 1-3 Manchester City: Haaland bags another hat-trick as Cityzens ease past Hammers

Erling Haaland achieved consecutive hat-tricks as Manchester City triumphed over West Ham United with a score of 3-1 in the Premier League, marking the Citizens' 18th straight unbeaten encounter against the Hammers.

Many anticipated that West Ham would adopt a defensive posture; however, Julen Lopetegui’s squad launched an aggressive attack early on, with a fierce strike from Jarrod Bowen testing Ederson's reflexes.

Manchester City quickly shifted the momentum in their favor, as Haaland, after an uncharacteristic miss, regained his sharpness in the 10th minute. He capitalized on a misstep by Lucas Paqueta, receiving a through ball from Bernardo Silva and finishing with composure.

The opportunities continued to flow, prompting Alphonse Areola to make a swift save against a clever shot from Kevin De Bruyne, who subsequently struck the crossbar.

Despite Manchester City's dominance during this phase, West Ham managed to equalize when Bowen outmaneuvered Josko Gvardiol and delivered a cross that Ruben Dias inadvertently redirected into his own goal.

This setback proved to be minor for the visitors, as a series of intricate plays around West Ham’s penalty area led to Haaland receiving a pass from Rico Lewis and powerfully scoring past Areola shortly after the half-hour mark. Haaland later attempted to assist Lewis, but the right-back was unable to convert the opportunity.

Lukasz Fabianski took over for Areola at halftime, marking his 200th appearance for the Hammers. However, it was Ederson who faced an early challenge in the second half when a rapid counterattack resulted in Mohammed Kudus striking the post.

This incident reignited hope for the home side, necessitating astute defending from Manuel Akanji to thwart Michail Antonio's clear chance on goal.

Both teams had their share of opportunities, yet Dias sent his attempt wide, and Max Kilman’s header also missed the target. Tomas Soucek, shortly after coming off the bench, came closest to leveling the score, but his shot rolled wide of the mark.

All hope was ultimately abandoned when Haaland sprinted onto Matheus Nunes’ through ball and delicately lifted the ball into the net for his eighth Premier League hat-trick, allowing Manchester City to extend their unbeaten streak in competitive away matches to 19 games, a record that dates back to October 2023. Conversely, West Ham has now suffered defeats in both of their home Premier League fixtures this season.
