West Ham United 2-5 Arsenal: Gunners thump Hammers in five-star display to go second

A dynamic first half witnessed Arsenal decisively overcome West Ham United at the London Stadium, securing a 5-2 victory with contributions from five different players on the visiting side.
West Ham had shown signs of improvement, earning seven points from their last three home league matches, but their task became significantly more challenging just ten minutes into the match when Arsenal took the lead.
Arsenal's proficiency in set-pieces is well-known, and they capitalized on this once more when Gabriel Magalhaes directed Bukayo Saka’s corner into the net, placing West Ham at a disadvantage. The Gunners maintained their dominance, with Saka narrowly missing the far post before linking up with Martin Ødegaard to great effect.
The exceptional combination play between the two players allowed Saka to set up Leandro Trossard for an easy tap-in after 27 minutes.
Following a reckless challenge from Lucas Paqueta, Saka, typically the designated penalty-taker, permitted Ødegaard to convert from the spot, initiating a rapid sequence of goals within six minutes.
The contest appeared to be settled when Max Kilman failed to intercept, enabling Kai Havertz to calmly finish. However, West Ham quickly responded with their first real attack.
A remarkable pass from Carlos Soler found a normally less prolific Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who executed a side-footed finish past David Raya for his second goal of the week. The visitors, caught off guard, conceded again when Emerson Palmieri struck a stunning free-kick that hit the crossbar and went in.
Before the first half concluded, there was still time for a seventh goal as Lukasz Fabianski’s punch fell to Gabriel, allowing Saka to convert from the penalty spot and restore a three-goal cushion for his team.
The exhilarating first half was followed by a more subdued second period, largely due to a stoppage-time goal that seemed to stifle the hosts' momentum.
In complete control of the match, Mikel Arteta’s team effectively kept West Ham at bay, with Tomas Soucek’s diving header being comfortably saved by Raya in a half that lacked significant goal-scoring opportunities.
A late free-kick from Raheem Sterling was the closest Arsenal came to extending their lead, as substitute Danny Ings, after rounding goalkeeper Raya, failed to find the target while off-balance shortly thereafter.
After a decisive victory over Sporting CP in the UEFA Champions League, Arsenal maintained their momentum with a comfortable win that propels them to second place in the Premier League table, at least temporarily.
On the other hand, Julen Lopetegui, under significant pressure, observed from the stands as his team struggled to compete for much of the match, leaving the Hammers in 14th place in the table, six points above the relegation zone.
