West Ham United 3-2 Fulham: Potter works his magic as Hammers defeat Cottagers in five-goal thriller

West Ham United achieved their inaugural Premier League victory under the management of Graham Potter, triumphing 3-2 against Fulham. This win further solidified their impressive home record against the Cottagers, with only one defeat in the last 13 encounters at their ground.
Prior to the match, only the two Manchester clubs had managed to defeat Fulham away in the Premier League this season, and Marco Silva’s squad commenced the game with the confidence characteristic of one of the league's top away teams.
In the opening six minutes, Alex Iwobi set up Harry Wilson, whose volley struck the crossbar. However, maintaining that early momentum proved challenging against a steadfast West Ham defense.
The dynamics of the match changed at the 27-minute mark, by which time West Ham had not registered a single shot. Carlos Soler’s free-kick was initially headed in by Max Kilman, but the goal was disallowed for offside. Nevertheless, the home supporters did not have to wait long for the first goal.
Fulham was caught off guard while attempting to play from the back, as Andreas Pereira’s blind square pass was intercepted by Soler, who skillfully deceived the recovering Bernd Leno to score the opening goal.
Just two minutes later, West Ham doubled their lead through a well-executed counterattack, culminating in a cross that found Aaron Wan-Bissaka at the back post. The full-back expertly squared the ball for Tomas Soucek to finish.
Fulham was left reeling, having conceded from the only two shots they faced before halftime.
Raul Jimenez became the second Fulham player to hit the woodwork just before the break, but their deficit was reduced shortly after the second half commenced when Iwobi’s cross found its way into the net, evading all players.
The prospect of a comeback was momentarily alive, but another defensive blunder from the visitors quickly restored West Ham’s two-goal advantage.
Just four minutes after entering the match, Danny Ings pressured Leno into a mistake, allowing Lucas Paqueta to score into an unguarded net, marking his fifth goal of the season.
Silva's frustration grew due to yet another fundamental mistake, yet his team demonstrated resilience by narrowing the deficit in a nearly identical manner, as Wilson made an attempt to connect with Iwobi's cross.
Although the Welshman did not make contact, the ball once again slipped past everyone on its journey past Lukasz Fabianski.
West Ham's defense faced a significant challenge, but Adama Traore's poor attempt, which went wide from a close distance, ultimately secured the victory for them.
This result concludes Fulham's nine-match unbeaten streak across all competitions and marks their first defeat in an away London derby in the league in nearly a year, leaving them off the pace for European qualification and only four points ahead of the Hammers.
