What is the FIFA Peace Prize?

Football fans around the world are gearing up for the 2026 World Cup draw in Washington, D.C., but this year’s ceremony comes with a new twist. Alongside the usual suspense over who ends up in which group, FIFA will unveil a brand-new honour: the FIFA Peace Prize – Football Unites the World.

A new award with a global message

The Peace Prize is FIFA’s newest annual accolade, created to celebrate individuals whose work brings people together and promotes peace. According to the organisation, it will recognise someone who has taken “exceptional and extraordinary actions for peace” and inspired unity across borders. The first presentation will take place during the World Cup draw at the Kennedy Center on December 5, with FIFA president Gianni Infantino handing out the award.

Infantino has stressed that, in a time marked by division, the sport should highlight and celebrate those who help bridge differences. He’s framed the prize as a reminder that football can be a force for optimism and human connection.

How will the winner be chosen?

At this stage, FIFA hasn’t disclosed how candidates will be nominated or evaluated. There’s no public shortlist, no indication of who sits on the selection panel, and no clarity on whether fans or national federations will have a say. For now, the process sits entirely behind closed doors.

Who is expected to receive the first prize?

Although FIFA has not confirmed anything officially, attention has swung heavily toward US President Donald Trump. His close relationship with Gianni Infantino, along with his efforts to make the 2026 World Cup part of his wider legacy, have fuelled widespread expectations that he will be announced as the inaugural recipient.

Trump has played an active role in promoting the tournament as both a global event hosted across North America and a milestone in the United States’ upcoming 250th Independence anniversary celebrations. His prominence at the ceremony is expected to overshadow much of the draw itself.

A high-profile stage

This year’s draw will be a major spectacle. The Kennedy Center’s selection as host venue nods to Trump, who currently serves as its chairman, and allows Washington D.C. to play a visible part in the tournament after missing out on hosting matches. The event will feature celebrity hosts, musical performances, and sports icons assisting with the draw.

Political elements are also in the mix, with Iran reversing an earlier decision to boycott the ceremony after its delegation initially had visas denied.

World Cup 2026: When it all begins

The tournament returns to its traditional summer calendar, kicking off on June 11, 2026, and running until July 19. It will be the first 48-team World Cup and the most logistically ambitious in history, spanning the United States, Canada and Mexico.
