Who is Anatoliy Trubin? Benfica's Goalkeeper who shocked Europe and forced Real Madrid into the Playoffs

The final matchday of the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League league phase delivered chaos, tension and drama across 18 simultaneous matches. Yet even on a night built for the unexpected, nothing came close to what unfolded in Lisbon.

As the clock ticked into the final minute at the Estádio da Luz, Benfica were leading Real Madrid 3–2. The scoreline was enough to deny Los Blancos a top-eight finish and automatic qualification for the round of 16, but it still wasn’t enough to keep Benfica alive in the competition.

Then came the moment that rewrote the script.

With seconds remaining, Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin was given permission to go forward for one final free-kick. It was a desperate roll of the dice, and one that paid off in astonishing fashion.

The Ukrainian rose above the Madrid defence and powered a header into the net, sending the home crowd into disbelief and propelling Benfica into 24th place on goal difference, the final playoff spot.

In one extraordinary moment, Trubin saved Benfica’s Champions League campaign, forced Real Madrid into the playoff round and etched his name into Champions League history. Trubin became just the fifth goalkeeper to score in the Champions League since the competition was rebranded in 1992/93.

He joins an exclusive list:

  • Hans-Jörg Butt
  • Sinan Bolat
  • Vincent Enyeama
  • Ivan Provedel
  • Anatoliy Trubin

For a 24-year-old goalkeeper to deliver such a moment on the biggest stage, against Real Madrid, no less, only amplified its significance.

Who is Anatoliy Trubin?

While his goal may have shocked casual fans, Trubin’s rise has been anything but sudden. The Ukrainian is widely regarded as one of the most promising young goalkeepers in world football.

  • Age: 24
  • Height: 1.99m
  • Nationality: Ukraine
  • Club: Benfica

Benfica signed Trubin in 2023 from Shakhtar Donetsk for €10 million, a deal that now looks like one of Europe’s smartest pieces of business. Since arriving in Portugal, his reputation and market value has soared.

One of the World’s Most Valuable Young Goalkeepers

Trubin’s current estimated market value stands at €28 million, making him:

  • Joint-10th most valuable goalkeeper in world football
  • The third most valuable goalkeeper aged 24 or under

Only Bart Verbruggen (€35m) and Lucas Chevalier (€35m) rank higher among keepers in his age bracket. His towering frame, sharp reflexes and growing command of the penalty area have made him a cornerstone of Benfica’s long-term plans, and a player increasingly watched across Europe.

After the match, Benfica manager José Mourinho revealed that Trubin’s late adventure wasn’t as spontaneous as it seemed. “We knew he could do it,” Mourinho said. “Against Porto the other week we needed a goal and he almost scored.”

It was a calculated risk, born of belief in his goalkeeper’s physical presence and timing, and one that will now be remembered as a masterstroke. Benfica’s dramatic qualification sets up a playoff tie against either Inter Milan or Real Madrid, depending on the draw.

If it’s Madrid again, Trubin will be under closer scrutiny than ever, especially if he ventures forward for another set-piece.
