Why Enzo Maresca substituted Cole Palmer in Chelsea’s defeat to Manchester United

Chelsea’s unbeaten run in the Premier League came to a halt at Old Trafford on Saturday evening as Manchester United edged out the Blues 2-1 in a fiery contest. The big talking point after the game was manager Enzo Maresca’s decision to substitute star forward Cole Palmer early in the first half, a move that surprised many Chelsea fans watching around the world.

Maresca explains Cole Palmer Substitution

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Maresca revealed that Palmer had been struggling with fitness concerns before the game. Despite pushing hard to be involved, the 22-year-old wasn’t at full strength.

“Cole tried this morning; he had a test to see if he could play. He was not 100% fit, but he made a huge effort to be out there for the team,” Maresca said. “After 20 minutes, he started to feel something, so we decided to change him.”

The Chelsea boss praised Palmer’s commitment, noting that the youngster wanted to play despite not being fully ready: “He wanted to be on the pitch, he wanted to help his teammates, so the effort was huge from him. But at that point, the risk was too much.”

Chelsea’s Game Plan derailed by early Red Card

Chelsea’s evening was already off to a nightmare start when goalkeeper Robert Sánchez was sent off after just five minutes for a reckless challenge on Bryan Mbeumo outside the box. The dismissal left the Blues with ten men and forced Maresca into reshuffling his tactics almost immediately.

“After three or four minutes, everything changed,” Maresca admitted. “The red card made it difficult not only for Chelsea but for any club. All the planning and preparation disappeared.”

In response to the red card, Maresca made a double substitution, withdrawing Estevão Willian and Pedro Neto. Moments later, Palmer was also taken off, capping a chaotic opening period for the visitors.

How Manchester United vs Chelsea Played Out

Manchester United took full advantage of the numerical edge in the first half. Bruno Fernandes netted his 100th goal for the club before Casemiro doubled the lead with a powerful header, sending the home fans into jubilation.

However, the match swung again when Casemiro was sent off after receiving a second yellow card in stoppage time of the first half, leaving both sides with ten men.

Chelsea pressed harder in the second half and eventually found a lifeline when Trevoh Chalobah rose highest to head home a cross with ten minutes left. The late goal set up a tense finale, but United managed to hold firm and secure the three points.

What the result means

The defeat marked Chelsea’s first loss of the 2024/25 Premier League season, putting a temporary dent in their title hopes. For Manchester United, the win provided much-needed relief for under-pressure manager Ruben Amorim, who had been facing speculation about his future.

Maresca, meanwhile, will be hoping Palmer’s setback is minor, as the England international has been central to Chelsea’s strong start this campaign. His fitness will be closely monitored ahead of their next fixture.
