Williams the hero as South Africa edge Cape Verde on penalties to progress to semi-finals

In a stunning penalty shootout, Ronwen Williams made four incredible saves, propelling South Africa to the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time since 2000. This victory comes exactly 28 years after their triumphant continental glory in 1996.
After defeating the favorites and highest-ranked African team, Morocco, in their previous match, Hugo Broos appears to be replicating the winning formula that led him to claim the trophy with underdogs Cameroon in 2019. The team's success has been built on solid defensive performances, consistent starting lineups, and impressive long-range goals from Teboho Mokoena.
Mokoena once again showcased his skills by testing Vozinha's goalkeeping abilities with a powerful shot, following his impressive free-kick in the previous game.
In the first half, both teams seemed more focused on avoiding defeat rather than taking control of the game.
However, a change in approach in the second half resulted in a more open and exciting match. Garry Rodrigues managed to breach the Bafana Bafana defense from the left side, but his attempt to curl the ball into the far corner went awry and ended up in the grateful arms of the goalkeeper.
Cape Verde coach Bubista's decision to substitute their all-time top scorer and captain, Ryan Mendes, with 25 minutes remaining seemed puzzling. And when Rodrigues, who had been a constant threat, was also taken off shortly after, it seemed like the Blue Sharks were settling for a penalty shootout.
Nevertheless, Cape Verde continued to push forward, and with extra time looming, Gilson had a golden opportunity to score but was denied by the fingertips of Williams, who managed to tip the fierce shot onto the post.
Vozinha's calm evening took an unexpected turn as South Africa aimed to ignite the game in extra time. Initially, the Cape Verde goalkeeper made an impressive save to deny Mihlali Mayambela's close-range shot after a knockdown by Evidence Makgopa.
Makgopa himself attempted a powerful header towards the ground, but Vozinha once again displayed his skills by denying the goal.
Ultimately, Bubista's well-executed strategy came to fruition, leading to a thrilling semi-final clash against Nigeria that would be decided by a penalty shootout.
Bebe took the first penalty, giving Williams the opportunity to become the first goalkeeper in this year's AFCON to save a penalty. Remarkably, Williams went on to save the next two penalties, making it three consecutive saves before ultimately securing South Africa's dramatic progression to the semi-finals by saving Cape Verde's crucial fifth kick.
