Wirtz nets first Liverpool goal as Anfield pays emotional tribute to Diogo Jota

Florian Wirtz marked a significant milestone in his Liverpool career by scoring his first goal for the club as the Reds moved into the Premier League top four with a narrow 2–1 victory over Wolves at Anfield.
The result, however, was secondary on a deeply emotional day as both clubs came together to honour the memory of former Liverpool and Wolves forward Diogo Jota, who tragically died in a car accident in July alongside his brother, Andre Silva.
Anfield unites in remembrance
The pre-match atmosphere at Anfield was filled with emotion. Jota’s two children led the teams onto the pitch as mascots, while his wife, Rute Cardoso, watched from the sidelines. Supporters from both ends of the stadium joined in chants for Jota during the 18th and 20th minutes, a nod to the shirt numbers he wore during his time at Wolves and Liverpool.

Jota joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020 and went on to win four major trophies, becoming a key figure during one of the club’s most successful modern periods.
Liverpool head coach Arne Slot praised the football community for the respect shown throughout the day.
“From the moment the tragedy happened, I’ve seen so many special moments,” Slot said. “Not only our fans, but away supporters as well, have shown incredible respect. Seeing his children walk out as mascots was emotional for everyone.”
Liverpool strike before the break
On the pitch, Liverpool were far from fluent but did enough to secure all three points against a Wolves side still rooted near the bottom of the table after a difficult start to the season. The breakthrough came shortly before halftime when Ryan Gravenberch powered home a first-time finish from Jeremie Frimpong’s delivery, giving the hosts a deserved lead.
Just 90 seconds later, Anfield erupted again as Wirtz finally opened his Liverpool account. The German midfielder reacted quickest to Hugo Ekitike’s pass, prodding the ball past the Wolves goalkeeper to make it 2–0.

Signed for a reported £100 million from Bayer Leverkusen, Wirtz has faced intense scrutiny in his early months in England, especially following the season-ending injury to Alexander Isak, which has increased expectations on the 22-year-old.
“He’s been very important for us all season,” Slot explained. “But players are always judged on goals and assists. Today he showed much more than just the goal. He was special in many moments.”
Wolves expose familiar Liverpool weakness
Despite their commanding first-half display, Liverpool once again showed vulnerability after the break. Wolves pulled a goal back six minutes into the second half when Santiago Bueno headed home from a set-piece, exposing an area that has troubled Slot’s side in recent weeks.
The goal sparked anxiety around Anfield, with memories still fresh of late defensive collapses against Leeds and Tottenham.
Wolves pushed for an equaliser, and Liverpool were forced to dig deep in the closing stages. A crucial, perfectly timed tackle from Conor Bradley denied Jhon Arias a clear chance late on, preserving the narrow lead.
Job done, but questions remain
The win lifts Liverpool into the Premier League’s top four and keeps momentum building under Slot, even if the performance left room for improvement.
For Wolves, the defeat deepens their struggles, with relegation fears growing after another spirited display that ended without reward.
For Liverpool and Anfield, though, the afternoon will be remembered less for the scoreline and more for the unity and emotion shown in honour of Diogo Jota, a player whose legacy continues to resonate deeply with both clubs.
