Wolfsburg sack coach Niko Kovac after third straight Bundesliga loss

VfL Wolfsburg dismissed manager Niko Kovac (52) on Sunday, following a 3-1 defeat at home to Augsburg, marking their third consecutive loss in the league and dropping the team to 14th place in the Bundesliga standings.

Wolfsburg's most recent league victory was on December 16th, and the team has now endured 11 consecutive Bundesliga matches without a win.

Marcel Schafer, the managing director of Wolfsburg, stated, "Following our internal review of the loss against Augsburg and the overall circumstances, we have decided to terminate our collaboration.

We view this decision as regrettable but necessary in order to provide the team with a fresh impetus to stabilize the situation."

Niko Kovac, a former Croatia international who previously managed Bayern Munich in the 2018/19 season, assumed the role of head coach at Wolfsburg before the 2022/23 campaign. In his debut season, he guided the team to an eighth-place finish.

However, the current season has been far from successful, with the team currently sitting on 25 points, six points above the relegation playoff position.

Expressing his disappointment, Kovac remarked, "As the head coach, I am particularly disheartened that we have been unable to reverse our fortunes, despite some positive signs.

We extend our best wishes to the team, the entire club, and its supporters for the remainder of this season and beyond."
