Wolves 0-1 Arsenal: Calafiori's strike sees off hosts and keeps Gunners' title hopes alive

Riccardo Calafiori’s decisive goal secured a 1-0 victory for Arsenal against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday in a tense Premier League clash that saw both sides reduced to 10 men. The win keeps Arsenal firmly in the title race, sitting second in the standings, six points behind leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand. Arsenal now hold a three-point cushion over third-placed Nottingham Forest, while Wolves remain perilously close to the relegation zone in 17th place with 16 points.
The match’s pivotal moment came in the second half, with Calafiori’s strike sealing a hard-fought win for the visitors. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta introduced the Italian at the start of the second period, a decision that proved critical.
The first half ended in controversy when Arsenal defender Myles Lewis-Skelly was shown a red card two minutes before the break. Referee Michael Oliver deemed Lewis-Skelly’s trip on Matt Doherty during a counter-attack to be serious foul play, a decision that left Arteta fuming.
"It is that clear that I leave it to you guys," Arteta told Sky Sports about the incident. "I am absolutely fuming, but I leave it with you. Because it is that obvious. I don't think my words are going to help."
Despite the setback, Arsenal created chances through Kai Havertz, whose headers tested Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa. Meanwhile, Wolves’ best opportunity came when Pablo Sarabia volleyed over after a well-placed cross from Nelson Semedo.
Arteta’s decision to bring on Calafiori at halftime paid off. Arsenal started the second half strongly, with Declan Rice forcing a save from Sa and Havertz heading narrowly over. However, Wolves gained momentum, with Matheus Cunha coming close twice. His deflected shot was parried by David Raya, and his effort from the resulting corner went wide.
The turning point came in the 70th minute when Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes received a second yellow card, leaving the hosts down to 10 men. Four minutes later, Gabriel Martinelli’s cross wasn’t cleared, and Calafiori struck a precise first-time shot past Sa, giving Arsenal the lead.
Rayan Ait-Nouri had a late chance to equalize for Wolves, but Raya made a crucial save to preserve Arsenal’s victory.
Reflecting on the red card, Calafiori said: "From the bench, it was clearly not a red card. I saw him at halftime and he was so disappointed for the team. But in the end, we won, so nothing happened. The strategy was not to put ourselves in a defensive mode. We wanted to try and win the game, and we did."
Arsenal’s determination under challenging circumstances keeps their Premier League hopes alive as they continue to chase leaders Liverpool.
