Wolves 1-2 Fulham: Cottagers boost European hopes with slim victory at Wolves

Fulham maintained their pursuit of a top position in the Premier League as they secured a 2-1 victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers, who missed the opportunity to extend their lead over the relegation zone to eight points.

Following a lackluster offensive display in their previous defeat to Crystal Palace, Fulham quickly found the net, scoring within the first minute from an unexpected player.

Ryan Sessegnon, selected in the starting lineup over Antonee Robinson, received a pass from Andreas Pereira on the left and skillfully placed the ball into the bottom corner, marking his first goal since October 2022.

Wolves responded with determination, and after a sustained period of pressure, they managed to equalize deservedly.

A cross from Jean-Ricner Bellegarde on the left was initially mishandled by Nelson Semedo, but the ball fell favorably to Joao Gomes, who struck it on the volley past a stranded Bernd Leno.

Given the flow of the game, the visitors could not contest the equalizer, yet they pressed forward after conceding and sought to regain their lead.

Andreas Pereira delivered a lofted pass to Adama Traore, whose volley was directed straight at Jose Sa, while Rodrigo Muniz had a close-range attempt blocked by Santiago Bueno.

This left the score level at halftime, but similar to the first half, Wolves’ lack of focus at the start of the second half proved costly.

Marco Silva’s side took just 62 seconds after the restart to regain their lead, with Adama assisting Muniz, who executed a delicate chip over the advancing Sa.

The Old Gold's lack of offensive threat in the second half prompted Vítor Pereira to make a tactical adjustment, bringing on Jorgen Strand Larsen for Bellegarde, reversing his earlier decision to start without a recognized striker.

Despite this change, Wolves continued to dominate possession but struggled to penetrate the resolute Fulham defense, which remained steadfast and looked to capitalize on counterattacks.

Former Wolves forward Raul Jimenez was responsible for failing to implement the strategy effectively, missing a significant opportunity when faced with Sa in a one-on-one situation, who remained resolute and maintained Jimenez's ongoing scoring drought against Wolves.

With the influential Matheus Cunha constrained for extended periods, Wolves were ultimately unable to secure any points from the match, resulting in Pereira experiencing his first loss against fellow manager Silva.

Although Fulham only ascends to ninth place, they are still well within the race for European qualification, having extended their impressive away form to just one defeat in their last ten matches.
