Wolves 1-2 Liverpool: Salah on target as Reds avoid scare to go top of the table

Liverpool secured a narrow victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers, winning 2-1 in the Premier League and achieving their 15th triumph in the last 16 encounters against the Wolves.

Wolverhampton displayed confidence in the opening moments, pressing Liverpool, although Jean-Ricner Bellegarde failed to capitalize on a promising opportunity with a rushed attempt.

The primary concern for the home side stemmed from Sam Johnstone's mistakes with the ball at his feet. Mario Lemina managed to dispossess Alexis Mac Allister following one of these misplays, but the defense effectively handled the resulting corner.

Alisson Becker was initially more active as a goalkeeper, reaching out to intercept Nelson Semedo’s cross and successfully catching a curling shot from Matheus Cunha.

As the half-hour mark neared, Liverpool began to find their rhythm, yet the Wolves' defense remained resolute, with Luis Diaz's attempts being blocked and Johnstone saving a free-kick from Trent Alexander-Arnold.

It seemed inevitable that Liverpool would break the deadlock when they caught Wolves off guard in the 40th minute, as Andrew Robertson found Dominik Szoboszlai, but Johnstone made a reflex save to deny the midfielder.

Nonetheless, Ibrahima Konate was unstoppable, rising above Toti Gomes to connect with Diogo Jota’s cross, heading the ball past Johnstone for his first-ever goal in the Premier League.

Following the intermission, Lemina was fortunate that Mohamed Salah failed to convert after receiving the ball from him within the penalty area, particularly as Wolves were already having difficulty mounting any significant response, with the visitors appearing at ease.

However, Konate overextended himself when attempting to clear the ball, inadvertently allowing Jorgen Strand Larsen to intercept it, which initiated a series of misfortunes for Liverpool, ultimately leading to Rayan Ait-Nouri equalizing for the home side.

Wolves' celebrations were short-lived, as Semedo fouled Jota, resulting in a penalty that Salah expertly converted.

Konate quickly regained his composure to execute a crucial block, deflecting Carlos Forbs’ shot out for a corner just before Salah squandered a chance to assist Curtis Jones.

Despite these challenges, Liverpool maintained their composure to secure their fourth victory across all competitions, positioning themselves at the top of the Premier League standings.

In contrast, Wolves have managed only one win this season, which came in the Carabao Cup, leaving them at the bottom of the table.
