Wolves 2-1 Chelsea: Wolves defeat wasteful visitors in rare Christmas Eve clash

Following their progression to the League Cup semi-finals earlier this week, Chelsea experienced a harsh reality check as they suffered a 2-1 loss against Wolverhampton Wanderers, marking their fourth consecutive away defeat in the Premier League.

After 28 years without Premier League football on Boxing Day, the initial stages of this match were certainly disappointing.

The lackluster performances from both teams can only be described as uninspiring, as neither side was able to take control of the game.

Scoring opportunities were scarce in the first half, and it wasn't until just after the 30-minute mark that either team managed to create a clear chance.

Chelsea had a stroke of luck when they finally broke through, as Raheem Sterling stole the ball from Joao Gomes and made a run towards goal. However, instead of passing to his teammates Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson, Sterling chose to take a shot himself, only to be denied by Jose Sa.

Wolves had limited attacking opportunities, but they started to find their rhythm towards the end of the first half. Hwang Hee-chan came close to scoring a surprise goal, but his shot narrowly missed the target.

The hosts were motivated by this near miss and came out in the second half with renewed determination. They came agonizingly close to scoring when Dorde Petrovic made an incredible save to deny Toti Gomes from close range.

However, Chelsea's respite was short-lived as they conceded a goal just minutes later. Mario Lemina guided Sarabia's corner into the net, giving Wolves the lead.

Realizing the need for a change, Mauricio Pochettino made a double substitution that almost immediately paid off. Christopher Nkunku's shot was cleared off the line by Toti, denying Chelsea an equalizer.

Wolves continued to put their bodies on the line to protect their lead. Craig Dawson made a crucial last-ditch block to deny Sterling, but unfortunately, he suffered an injury and had to be substituted shortly after.

In a surprising turn of events, the match was far from over with a staggering 11 minutes of stoppage time. Just when it seemed like the game was coming to a close, Wolves seized the opportunity as Matt Doherty swiftly reacted to a loose ball in the penalty area, scoring his first Premier League goal for Wolves since his return to the club.

However, Wolves didn't have complete control as Nkunku quickly retaliated, setting the stage for an intense finale. Unfortunately for Chelsea, their efforts were in vain as Wolves secured a crucial victory, leveling the points with Chelsea as they approach the Christmas period.
