Women's T20 World Cup 2024: Spinners shines as England defeat Bangladesh

Employing a strategy that featured four spinners, the 2009 champions effectively limited Bangladesh to 97-7 on a sluggish pitch in Sharjah, successfully defending their lowest total in T20 World Cup history. England posted a score of 118-7, bolstered by a 41-run performance off 40 balls from opener Danni Wyatt-Hodge.

For Bangladesh, middle-order batter Sobhana Mostary stood out with a score of 44 runs from 48 balls, which included a notable six off Dean over deep square leg. The outcome was disappointing for Bangladesh, who had previously celebrated their first T20 World Cup victory in a decade against Scotland in the tournament's opening match on Thursday. "We missed a significant opportunity to defeat a strong team.

Our bowlers performed admirably, but our batters fell short," remarked Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana. "On this type of pitch, we needed to establish solid partnerships. Our powerplay was ineffective, and we lost too many wickets." Choosing to bat first, England began cautiously before Wyatt-Hodge and Maia Bouchier (23) began to find their rhythm with some impressive shots. "It was challenging out there; the conditions were tough for batting and hitting boundaries.

Wyatt-Hodge and Bouchier performed well," stated England captain Heather Knight. "We aimed for a target of 135-140, which was our preparation goal." Bouchier struck two consecutive fours in the fifth over off Marufa Akter, propelling England to 36 runs in the first five overs. Rabeya Khan dropped Bouchier on 16 off Marufa at point but later redeemed herself by taking the catch that dismissed Bouchier, with Nahida Akter also contributing at mid-on.

Bangladesh made another breakthrough when the dangerous Nat Sciver-Brunt (two) was trapped leg-before by Fahima Khatun in the eighth over. England faced further challenges when Knight (six) attempted a drive down the ground but missed entirely, resulting in her dismissal by Ritu Moni.
