World champions Spain defeat France to win Women's Nations League

Aitana Bonmati found the back of the net as Spain secured the Women's Nations League championship alongside their World Cup triumph, defeating France 2-0 in a convincing fashion during the final held in Seville on Wednesday.

Spain's impressive winning streak continues as they gear up for their debut at the Olympics in Paris later this year.

There is optimism surrounding France, led by Herve Renard, as they aim to compete for the Olympic crown on home turf. However, they were thoroughly outclassed by Spain.

The reigning champions clinched victory under the guidance of coach Montserrat Tome, who took over from the controversial Jorge Vilda. Vilda was dismissed after the World Cup, which was followed by an incident involving former football federation president Luis Rubiales forcibly kissing forward Jenni Hermoso.

Barcelona's Bonmati expressed his delight, stating, "Six months ago we won the World Cup and now the Nations League, what more could you ask for?" He added, "It's truly remarkable what we have accomplished... This team has no limits - World Cup, Nations League, and now the Olympics."

Spain dominated the early exchanges, with Irene Paredes coming close to scoring from a corner in the 26th minute.

The breakthrough came just after the half-hour mark when Bonmati netted from Olga Carmona's cross. Despite almost doubling their lead before halftime, Spain had a penalty appeal turned down for a possible handball by France's Amandine Henry.

However, Tome's team wasted no time in doubling their lead after halftime. In the 53rd minute, Mariona Caldentey skillfully directed Ona Batlle's precise pass into the bottom corner of the net. France, on the other hand, failed to mount any sort of comeback and didn't even manage to get a single shot on target throughout the entire match.

Spain continued to press for a third goal, with Paredes having another header saved by France goalkeeper Pauline Peyraud-Magnin. Despite their efforts, Spain had to settle for a comfortable two-goal victory.

In another match, the Netherlands will host Germany in the third-place play-off in Heerenveen on Wednesday. The winners of this match will join Spain and France, who automatically qualified as hosts, in securing their spots for the Olympics.
