World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka Clinches Back-to-Back WTA Player of the Year Awards

Aryna Sabalenka has further cemented her dominance in women’s tennis after being named WTA Player of the Year for the second consecutive season, a feat achieved by only a select group of legends in the sport’s history.

The world No. 1 received the honour on Monday following a commanding 2025 campaign that blended elite on-court success with record-setting financial returns. Sabalenka secured nearly 80 percent of the international media vote, underlining the scale of her influence across the WTA Tour.

A Season Defined by Consistency and Power

At 27, Sabalenka delivered one of the most complete seasons in modern women’s tennis. She led the 2025 WTA Tour in match wins, titles won, and finals appearances, reaching nine finals across the calendar year.

Her season highlight came at the US Open, where she successfully defended her title against rising American star Amanda Anisimova, claiming her fourth Grand Slam singles trophy. Sabalenka also reached three of the four Grand Slam finals, compiling an impressive 23–3 record at majors.

Beyond the Slams, her trophy haul included victories at the Brisbane International, Miami Open, and Madrid Open, reinforcing her reputation as a force across all surfaces.

Historic Rankings and Record Prize Money

Sabalenka’s dominance was reflected in the rankings. She held the world No. 1 position for the entire 2025 season, finishing year-end No. 1 for the second straight year.

In July, she crossed a rare milestone by surpassing 12,000 WTA ranking points, becoming the first player to do so since Serena Williams in 2015.

Financially, the season was equally remarkable. Sabalenka earned a record-breaking $15 million in prize money, setting a new benchmark for annual earnings on the women’s tour and highlighting the growing commercial strength of elite women’s tennis.

She closed the year with a 63–12 win-loss record, a level of consistency matched by very few in recent decades.

WTA Awards: A New Generation Emerges

While Sabalenka headlined the awards, the 2025 WTA honours also spotlighted the sport’s rising stars and comeback stories.

  • Most Improved Player:
Amanda Anisimova claimed the award after a breakthrough year that saw her reach two Grand Slam finals for the first time and climb from world No. 34 to No. 4.
  • Newcomer of the Year:
Canadian teenager Vicky Mboko, just 19, earned recognition after an extraordinary rise from outside the top 300 to world No. 18.
  • Comeback Player of the Year:
Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic was honoured following a strong return from a 13-month maternity break, re-establishing herself among the world’s elite.
  • Doubles Team of the Year:
Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend capped their season by winning the award after securing their second Grand Slam title together.

Sabalenka’s Global Profile Continues to Grow

Off the court, Sabalenka’s profile continues to expand. She is set to face Nick Kyrgios in a high-profile exhibition match later this month, a Battle of the Sexes-style event aimed at further elevating the visibility of women’s tennis.

Her back-to-back Player of the Year awards place her among an elite group of champions and underline her position not just as the sport’s best player, but as one of its most influential global figures.

As the WTA Tour heads toward a new season, Sabalenka remains the benchmark, both competitively and commercially.
