World No. 2 Swiatek does not anticipate WADA appealing doping ruling

World number two Iga Swiatek (23) expressed on Friday her readiness to move past a doping controversy, asserting that there is no justification for the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to contest her case.

The Polish athlete tested positive for the heart medication trimetazidine (TMZ) in an out-of-competition sample collected in August while she held the top ranking.

Nevertheless, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) determined that the violation was unintentional, resulting in a one-month suspension that caused her to miss three tournaments in Asia and relinquish her number one status.

The details of the incident only became public in late November, and she is set to compete in her first tournament since then at the mixed-teams United Cup in Sydney, prior to the Australian Open next month.

Swiatek acknowledged that the experience had been "mentally tough," but noted that the public reaction has largely been supportive, alleviating concerns about potential ostracism.

"I believe that most people are understanding," remarked the five-time Grand Slam champion.

"Those who have read the documents and understand the system recognize that I bore no responsibility and had no control over the situation."

"I aim to continue with my life, concentrating on various aspects, particularly preparing for the season and focusing on tennis, as that is the best course of action following such an incident," she added.

Her situation bears resemblance to that of Italian men's world number one Jannik Sinner.

He was cleared by the ITIA after testing positive for traces of the steroid clostebol in March. However, WADA appealed the ruling in September, and he is currently awaiting the decision.

Swiatek does not expect WADA to pursue a similar course of action in her case.

"I provided all possible evidence, and there is honestly not much more to be done," she stated.

"In our view, there is no basis for an appeal."

"However, this entire process has sometimes felt quite abstract and difficult to comprehend from a perspective that does not involve legal considerations."

However, it is important to recognize that this matter pertains to legal principles and the specific language used in the documentation. Therefore, I do not anticipate an appeal, as I have no control over the forthcoming developments.

"From my experience with the procedures I encountered and the manner in which I was treated from the outset, I found the process to be fair," she stated.

"I was able to identify the source of the contamination quite promptly, which is why the case was resolved in a timely manner."
