WSL: Chelsea, Arsenal secure big wins as Man City lose Manchester derby

The Women's Super League returned with a bang after the holiday break, as Chelsea and Arsenal celebrated commanding 5-0 victories, while Manchester City suffered a 4-2 derby defeat to Manchester United, resulting in a dramatic shift at the top of the table.

League leaders Chelsea delivered a 5-0 thrashing of West Ham United, cementing their position at the summit with 31 points from 11 matches. The Blues remain unbeaten, boasting 10 wins this season.

Catarina Macario opened the scoring early, followed by first-half goals from Erin Cuthbert and Aggie Beever-Jones, giving Chelsea a comfortable 3-0 lead at halftime. Sandy Baltimore added a fourth in the second half, and a late own goal by Amber Tysiak sealed the rout.

Arsenal climbed to second in the standings with a dominant 5-0 win over Crystal Palace. Leah Williamson provided the early breakthrough, and a flurry of four goals after halftime showcased the Gunners’ attacking prowess. Arsenal now sit seven points behind Chelsea.

The late Sunday kickoff produced a thrilling Manchester derby, as United recorded a stunning 4-2 victory over rivals City. Ella Toone was the star of the show, netting a hat-trick to power the Red Devils past City for their first away win in the WSL against their neighbors.

United surged to a 3-0 lead within 36 minutes, but City clawed back with two quick goals before halftime. Toone’s decisive third goal in the opening minute of the second half secured the win, moving United to third place, ahead of City, who dropped to fourth.

The second half of the season kicked off on Friday with Liverpool edging Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1 at home. On Saturday, Merseyside rivals Everton were held to a 1-1 draw by Aston Villa.

Chelsea’s unbeaten form keeps them as title favorites, but with Arsenal and United finding their stride, the race for WSL supremacy is heating up.
