WTA Finals: Coco Gauff sweeps past Ons Jabeur

Coco Gauff, the reigning US Open champion, wasted no time in her first match at the WTA Finals. She needed just 57 minutes to secure a resounding victory over Ons Jabeur in Cancun, Mexico. Gauff, who is the third seed in the tournament, dominated the match, taking the first seven games before a one-hour rain delay. When play resumed, she swiftly closed out the match with a score of 6-0, 6-1, marking her 50th win of the season.
In the other Group B contest, Iga Swiatek demonstrated her resilience by coming back from a 5-2 deficit in the first set to defeat Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova with a score of 7-6 (7-3), 6-0. Swiatek, who is striving to reclaim her world number one ranking, initially struggled. However, she managed to seize control of the match as Vondrousova twice attempted to serve out the first set but failed to respond to Swiatek's dominance.
Following her opening match, Vondrousova expressed her dissatisfaction with the conditions at the venue, which faced last-minute court construction before the tournament began. She conveyed her disappointment, stating, "My first WTA Finals is not at all what I imagined. We work hard all year to get to the finals, and in the end, it's just a disappointment."
The WTA Finals feature the world's top eight players from this season, divided into two groups of four. After the round-robin matches, the top two players from each group will advance to the semi-finals scheduled for Saturday.
Coco Gauff's participation in this tournament comes after her recent separation from coach Pere Riba following the China Open. She clarified the circumstances, noting, "Unfortunately, it wasn't my decision, but we had to end the partnership. If it was up to me, I would have loved to have him here. But you know, things happen. Life happens." Gauff expressed her respect for her former coach and his impact on her career, emphasizing that their parting was due to circumstances beyond their control.
Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek are set to face each other in the upcoming match on Wednesday.
