WTA Roundup: Canadians shine in Tokyo

Bianca Andreescu of Canada progressed to the quarter-finals of the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo on Wednesday, following the retirement of Brazil's second seed, Beatriz Haddad Maia (28), due to a back injury.

At the time of the match's conclusion, Andreescu was leading 3-0, while Haddad Maia was visibly in distress. After enduring numerous setbacks and extended periods away from competition due to her own injuries, Andreescu is now in pursuit of her fourth career title.

Her previous three titles were secured in 2019, and this marks her first appearance in a quarter-final at the WTA 500 level or higher since 2022.

In another notable advancement, Canadian Leylah Fernandez triumphed over No. 8 seed Varvara Gracheva from France with a score of 6-0, 3-6, 7-5.

The No. 6 seed, Diana Shnaider from Russia, faced little resistance against Bulgaria's Viktoriya Tomova, winning decisively with a score of 6-2, 6-2. Shnaider is set to compete against Sayaka Ishii, who emerged victorious over Turkey's Zeynep Sonmez with a scoreline of 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

At the Guangzhou Open, defending champion Xiyu Wang endured a lengthy third set to overcome her fellow Chinese player Sijia Wei, winning 3-6, 6-0, 7-5 and securing her place in the quarter-finals on home soil.

Wang triumphed in the two-hour and 18-minute match by seizing her fourth break point while Wei was serving to remain in the match during the third set, which constituted nearly half of the total match duration. Wang successfully converted five out of eleven break opportunities, while Wei managed to capitalize on only two.

In the upcoming round, Wang is set to compete against Lucia Bronzetti from Italy, who triumphed over Jaqueline Cristian of Romania with a score of 7-6(5), 6-4.

Also progressing to the quarter-finals are seventh-seeded Jessica Bouzas Maneiro from Spain, who defeated Shi Han of China 6-3, 6-4, and Olga Danilovic from Serbia.

Danilovic achieved a significant upset against fifth-seeded Diane Parry of France, winning decisively with a score of 6-1, 6-0 in just 74 minutes.
