WTA roundup: Cocciaretto stuns Ostapenko in Birmingham

Elisabetta Cocciaretto of Italy defeated reigning champion Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia 6-3, 6-3 in the first round of the Rothesay Classic on Monday in Birmingham, England.

Cocciaretto saved eight of nine break points while stunning top seed Ostapenko. Cocciaretto's next opponent will be Sloane Stephens, who defeated Yuan Yue of China 6-3, 6-3.

Zhu Lin of China defeated third-seeded Romanian Sorana Cirstea 7-6 (2), 6-2, while sixth-seeded Canadian Leylah Fernandez defeated Spain's Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-1, 6-1.

No. 7 Anastasia Potapova defeated fellow Russian Elina Avanesyan 6-4, 6-4. Swiss Viktorija Golubic, Australian Ajla Tomljanovic, and Italian Lucia Bronzetti also won in the first round.

Fifth-seeded Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic defeated Spain's Rebeka Masarova 6-4, 6-3 in the first round in Berlin.

Vondrousova was the only seeded player in action on Monday. She saved four of five break points and won 74.3 percent of her first serves.

Daria Kasatkina of Russia rallied to defeat Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine 4-6, 7-6 (6), 6-3, while Czech Republic's Katerina Siniakova defeated Emma Navarro 6-4, 6-3. Anna Kalinskaya from Russia and Zeynep Sonmez from Turkey also won on Monday.
