WTA roundup: Danielle Collins continues form with two wins in Charleston

Danielle Collins, aged 30, continued her winning streak by securing two victories on Thursday to advance to the quarter-finals of the Credit One Charleston Open.

Initially, Collins caused an upset by defeating the second-seeded Ons Jabeur of Tunisia with a score of 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 in a second-round match that was postponed to Thursday due to rain. Following this, Collins dominated Sloane Stephens with a score of 6-2, 6-2 in a match-up between unseeded U.S. players.

Collins, a Floridian player who will retire at the end of the season, recently clinched the Miami Open championship.

Her next challenge will be against the 11th-seeded Elise Mertens of Belgium, who overcame the seventh-seeded Elina Svitolina of Ukraine with a score of 6-4, 6-1. Earlier on Thursday, Mertens defeated France's Varvara Gracheva with a score of 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

Jessica Pegula from the United States secured a spot in the quarter-finals with a comfortable 6-2, 6-2 victory over Poland's Magda Linette.

In other third-round matches, the 12th seed Victoria Azarenka from Belarus staged a comeback to defeat the United States' Taylor Townsend with a score of 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-4.

Third-seeded Maria Sakkari of Greece triumphed over Australia's Astra Sharma with a score of 6-4, 6-1, while fourth-seeded Daria Kasatkina of Russia eliminated the 15th-seeded Anhelina Kalinina of Ukraine with a score of 6-1, 6-4.

The ninth-seeded Veronika Kudermetova of Russia outplayed the fifth-seeded Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil with a score of 7-5, 6-1, and Romania's Jaqueline Cristian defeated the 10th-seeded Emma Navarro of the United States with a score of 6-3, 5-7, 6-1.

In the Copa Colsanitas tournament, Camila Osorio, the sixth seed and a crowd favorite, advanced to the quarter-finals in Bogota, Colombia. She secured her victory with a 7-6(4), 6-4 win over Romania's Anca Alexia Todoni.

Despite struggling with eight double faults, Osorio managed to win 45 percent of her return points. On the other hand, Todoni struggled with her first serves, only managing to put 48 percent of them in play.

In another match, Tatjana Maria of Germany, the second seed, had to endure a lengthy delay caused by a power failure before defeating Argentina's Julia Riera 2-6, 6-0, 6-2.

The top-seeded player, Marie Bouzkova from the Czech Republic, emerged victorious against the United States' Hailey Baptiste with a score of 6-3, 6-4.

Additionally, Laura Siegemund of Germany, the seventh seed, made a comeback to defeat Great Britain's Francesca Jones 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-2.
