WTA roundup: Defending champion Iga Swiatek motors into Stuttgart quarter-finals

Iga Swiatek, the world number one and defending champion, advanced to the quarter-finals of the WTA Stuttgart clay-court tournament by defeating Elise Mertens in straight sets on Thursday.

This victory marked her ninth consecutive win at the French Open warm-up event. Swiatek's dominance in the tournament has put her in contention for a third consecutive title in Stuttgart, which would also earn her a third luxury car from the sponsors, following her triumph in 2022.

Swiatek expressed her enthusiasm for the possibility of receiving another Porsche, stating, "There's always room for a Porsche. If not, we'll create it. I'll construct an underground garage." This match was Swiatek's first clay-court appearance since her French Open victory last June.

The Polish player started strongly, establishing a commanding 5-1 lead in the first set. Although she faced a brief setback at 0-30, she managed to recover and close out the set. In the second set, Swiatek was broken early but managed to regain control through her strong serving. She ultimately secured the victory with a forehand winner on her fourth match point, after Mertens had saved the previous three.

Acknowledging the competitiveness of the tournament, Swiatek remarked, "This is not an easy event. Everyone is highly motivated to win that car." In the quarter-finals, the top seed will face former US Open champion Emma Raducanu, with a spot in the semi-finals at stake.

Raducanu, who contributed to Britain's qualification for the Billie Jean King Cup finals last weekend, defeated Czech teenager Linda Noskova 6-0, 7-5.

This marks Raducanu's first quarter-final appearance in 19 months. She has faced numerous injuries since her Grand Slam breakthrough in 2021 and missed a significant portion of last season.

Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk managed to save five match points at 5-4 in the final set to overcome fifth seed Zheng Qinwen of China, with a score of 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.

Ranked 27th in the world, Kostyuk will be up against US Open champion Coco Gauff on Friday for a chance to advance to the semi-finals.

Elena Rybakina defeated Veronika Kudermetova 7-6(3), 1-6, 6-4, showcasing her strong performance in 2024.

The Kazakh player, currently ranked fourth in the world, has already secured titles in Brisbane and Abu Dhabi this year, defeating the Russian in a match that lasted two hours and 33 minutes.

"I know my serve is my weapon. I believe I can rely on it during challenging moments. It's not always perfect, but it's definitely a strength," Rybakina commented.

Rybakina is set to compete in her seventh quarter-final of the season on Friday, where she will face Jasmine Paolini, who defeated Ons Jabeur 7-6(8), 6-4.

Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova triumphed over Anastasia Potapova 7-6(5), 6-1 in their last 16 encounter.
