WTA Roundup: Emma Raducanu secures passage into second round in Abu Dhabi

Emma Raducanu of Great Britain defeated Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic 6-4, 6-1 to open the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open on Monday in the UAE.

Raducanu, the surprise winner of the 2021 US Open, received a wild card into the tournament after missing most of 2023 due to wrist and ankle surgeries. She broke Bouzkova's serve seven times in nine attempts and had a 23-15 lead in total winners. Her next opponent will be Tunisia's second seed, Ons Jabeur.

No. 6 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil defeated Xiyu Wang of China 6-2, 7-6 (4), recovering from a 3-0 deficit in the second set and a 4-2 deficit in the subsequent tiebreaker. No. 7 seed Daria Kasatkina of Russia defeated Diane Parry of France 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.

In an all-American match, Ashlyn Krueger defeated Bernarda Pera 6-2, 5-7, 6-3, while Romania's Sorana Cirstea defeated France's Caroline Garcia 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-4.

Two other seeded players were not as fortunate. Colombia's Camila Osorio defeated Bulgaria's No. 7 seed Viktoriya Tomova 6-2, 6-4, while Argentina's No. 9 seed Nadia Podoroska was defeated by Denmark's Clara Tauson 6-3, 6-1.
