WTA roundup: Gauff survives Vickery challenge in Stuttgart

No. 3 Seed Coco Gauff defeated Sachia Vickery 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 on Wednesday in an all-American second round match at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, Germany.

Gauff overcame a 4-2 deficit in the third set and 15 double faults in the match to maintain her dominance over fellow Americans. Jessica Pegula is the only woman from her country to defeat Gauff since Sofia Kenin did so in the first round of Wimbledon in 2023.

Second-seeded Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka is also through to the quarterfinals after her tie with Paula Badosa of Spain ended 7-6 (4), 4-6, 3-3, when Badosa retired due to a left thigh injury.

Tunisia's seventh seed Ons Jabeur, Great Britain's Emma Raducanu, Russian Anastasia Potapova, and Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk all won their first-round matches on Wednesday.

Mirra Andreeva, the fifth seed from Russia, and Sloane Stephens, the sixth seed from the United States, both advanced to the quarterfinals in Rouen, France.

Andreeva defeated countrywoman Elina Avanesyan 7-5, 6-4, while Stephens defeated Czech Republic's Karolina Pliskova 6-3, 6-2.

Italian Martina Trevisan defeated Japan's Naomi Osaka 6-4, 6-2, while Slovakia's Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, Poland's Magda Linette, and Romania's Elena-Gabriela Ruse all won in straight sets.

Varvara Gracheva of France defeated Bulgaria's Viktoriya Tomova 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 in the day's only three-set match.
