WTA roundup: Jessica Pegula dominates Iryna Shymanovich to reach Charleston Open third round

Top seed Jessica Pegula delivered a commanding performance at the Credit One Charleston Open on Wednesday, cruising past Belarus’ Iryna Shymanovich 6-0, 6-3 in just 71 minutes to advance to the third round.
Playing her first match since finishing runner-up to Aryna Sabalenka at the Miami Open, Pegula showed no signs of fatigue. She capitalized on all six of her break point opportunities, making up for a 53% first-serve percentage.
The day saw only two seeded players exit the tournament, with No. 16 Peyton Stearns falling 6-1, 6-4 to Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic, while No. 17 Belinda Bencic suffered a 6-0, 6-3 loss to Sofia Kenin. Meanwhile, third seed Qinwen Zheng, fourth seed Emma Navarro, and fifth seed Daria Kasatkina were among those who secured their spots in the next round, with every match finishing in straight sets.

Top-seeded Marie Bouzkova dominated her second-round match in Bogota, defeating Cyprus’ Raluka Serban 6-1, 6-3. Bouzkova took advantage of nine double faults from her opponent and now moves on to face Poland’s Katarzyna Kawa, who overcame Brazil’s Laura Pigossi in a hard-fought 1-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 victory.
Elsewhere in the tournament, Leolia Jeanjean secured a 6-4, 6-3 win over fellow French player Selena Janicijevic, while Julieta Pareja of the United States edged past Romania’s Patricia Maria Tig 6-3, 7-6 (3).
