WTA roundup: Kalinina and Stephens advance in Austin, Yastremska through in San Diego

In the opening round of the ATX Open in Austin, Texas, Anhelina Kalinina, the top seed from Ukraine, encountered minimal opposition as she effortlessly defeated Czech player Sara Bejlek with a commanding 6-3, 6-2 victory.
Kalinina dominated the match from the start, winning 14 out of 16 first-service points. She secured three of the final four games in the first set and continued her momentum in the second set, quickly taking a 5-1 lead.
In another match, second-seeded American Sloane Stephens defeated Tereza Martincova of the Czech Republic 6-4, 6-0. However, seventh-seeded Peyton Stearns fell to Anna Karolina Schmiedlova of Slovakia in a close match, with a score of 2-6, 6-4, 5-7.
Several other American players, including Katie Volynets, Taylor Townsend, and Sachia Vickery, secured victories on Tuesday. Nevertheless, Emiliana Arango of Colombia defeated Alycia Parks of the United States 6-2, 6-3.
Xiyu Wang, the sixth seed from China, triumphed over Nadia Podoroska of Argentina with a score of 7-5, 6-4. Additionally, players like Anastasija Sevastova and Darja Semenistaja from Latvia, as well as Kamilla Rakhimova from Russia, also won their first-round matches. Third seed Danielle Collins of the United States claimed a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Australian Olivia Gadecki later in the evening.
At the San Diego Open, fifth-seeded Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine fought off an upset bid, defeating Caroline Dolehide of the U.S. 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 in the first round. Yastremka capitalized on seven out of eight break points during the match.
In the next round, she will face Russian Anna Blinkova, who defeated Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 on Tuesday.
Seventh-seeded Donna Vekic of Croatia secured a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Katherine Hui of the U.S., while eighth-seeded Leylah Fernandez of Canada had to retire during her match, allowing German Tatjana Maria to advance. Taylah Preston of Australia and Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic also emerged victorious.
