WTA roundup: Leylah Fernandez and Danielle Collins stunned in Cleveland and Monterrey

Ana Bogdan of Romania made a remarkable comeback to defeat Canada's Leylah Fernandez with a score of 1-6, 7-6, 6-2 in the opening round of Tennis in the Land held on Tuesday in Cleveland. Meanwhile, Danielle Collins was eliminated by Erika Andreeva in Monterrey.

In the decisive third set, Bogdan established a commanding 5-0 lead. Fernandez managed to save seven match points during an intense seventh game, extending the set to an eighth, but Bogdan ultimately secured the victory, taking advantage of Fernandez's 11 double faults.

Czech Republic's third seed Katerina Siniakova and American sixth seed Peyton Stearns both required three sets to progress. Siniakova staged a comeback to win against Japan's Sayaka Ishii with a score of 6-7, 6-3, 7-6, saving three match points in the ninth game of the final set after trailing 5-1.

Stearns triumphed over Japan's Moyuka Uchijima with a scoreline of 6-0, 1-6, 6-1, despite committing eight double faults and failing to save any of the four break points she encountered.

In other matches, Belgium's Greet Minnen, along with Spaniards Jessica Bouzas Maneiro and Sara Sorribes Tormo, advanced alongside top seed Beatriz Haddad Maia.

In the Abierto GNP Seguros, Russia's Erika Andreeva completed a comeback by winning the last four games to defeat top-seeded Danielle Collins of the United States, with a final score of 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the second round in Monterrey, Mexico.

Andreeva did not face a single break point in the third set, achieving an impressive 83 percent success rate on her first serve.

The remainder of the day's matches featured first-round contests. Sixth-seeded Linda Noskova from the Czech Republic narrowly missed a double bagel, defeating Kazakhstani qualifier Anna Danilina with a score of 6-0, 6-1.

Noskova led 6-0, 5-0 before Danilina, ranked 958th globally, finally managed to hold serve. The match concluded in just 49 minutes, with Noskova not facing any break points.

Yue Yuan of China, the seventh seed, battled to defeat Serbia's Aleksandra Krunic 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, while Magdalena Frech of Poland defeated Argentina's Nadia Podoroska 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

Other first-round winners included China's Xiyu Wang, Mexico's Renata Zarazua, and Croatia's Petra Martic.
