WTA roundup: McCartney Kessler secures top 50 win in Cleveland

American McCartney Kessler achieved a remarkable victory in front of an enthusiastic audience on Wednesday, overcoming fourth seed Xinyu Wang of China with a score of 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the second round of Tennis in the Land held in Cleveland.

This victory marked Kessler's first win against a top 50 opponent in her career, as she capitalized on Wang's inability to maintain a 2-0 lead in the second set. Kessler concluded the match strongly, winning the last four games of the third set after Wang had leveled the score at 2.

Although Wang was defeated, she recorded a higher number of aces (5-4) and fewer double faults (4-3) than Kessler.

In addition, two other seeded players were eliminated, with Arantxa Rus from the Netherlands defeating seventh seed Viktoriya Tomova of Bulgaria 6-3, 6-3, and Clara Burel from France overcoming eighth-seeded Sophia Kenin of the United States with a score of 6-4, 6-3.

Top seed Beatriz Haddad Maia from Brazil, third seed Katerina Siniakova from the Czech Republic, fifth seed Anastasia Potapova from Russia, and sixth seed Peyton Stearns from the United States all secured victories. Romania's Ana Bogdan also progressed to the next round.

In the Abierto GNP Seguros, seventh seed Yue Yuan of China achieved a convincing 6-4, 6-1 victory over Croatian Petra Martic in the second round in Monterrey, Mexico.

Yuan recorded only one ace compared to Martic's five but successfully saved four out of six break points while converting five of six opportunities.

Fifth-seeded Elina Svitolina from Ukraine and sixth-seeded Linda Noskova from the Czech Republic also advanced with straight-set victories.

New Zealand's Lulu Sun managed to save a match point late in the third set, ultimately winning against Argentina's Maria Lourdes Carle with a score of 6-3, 2-6, 7-6.
