WTA roundup: Mertens cruises in Singapore, Yastremska battles to victory in Linz

No. 2 seed Elise Mertens from Belgium required only 55 minutes to secure a decisive victory over Taylor Townsend, winning 6-1, 6-0 in the first round of the Singapore Tennis Open on Tuesday.

Mertens encountered six break points but successfully saved each one, while converting five out of eight chances to break Townsend's serve. She will next compete against Germany's Tatjana Maria, who triumphed over Ukrainian player Yuliia Starodubtseva with a score of 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.

In another match, No. 5 seed Polina Kudermetova of Russia experienced a swift defeat, as Australian Kimberly Birrell emerged victorious with a score of 6-3, 6-2 in 61 minutes. No. 4 seed Xinyu Wang from China overcame Canadian Rebecca Marino with a scoreline of 6-4, 5-7, 7-5, while Olivia Gadecki of Australia caused an upset against Japanese eighth seed Moyuka Uchijima, winning 6-1, 6-7 (1), 6-2.

Additional winners on Tuesday included American Hailey Baptiste, Russian Maria Timofeeva, and Switzerland's Jil Teichmann.

At the Upper Austria Ladies Linz, Russian sixth seed Anastasia Potapova efficiently defeated Austrian Julia Grabher with a score of 6-2, 6-2 in 67 minutes during the first round.

Ukrainian fifth seed Dayana Yastremska faced a more challenging match but ultimately prevailed against Italy's Lucia Bronzetti, winning 7-6 (6), 7-5, while successfully saving six out of eight break points and converting all three break points she faced. The only other seeded player in action was Denmark's eighth seed Clara Tauson, who defeated Ukraine's Anhelina Kalinina 6-3, 6-3.

Also advancing were Russia's Aliaksandra Sasnovich, Slovakian Rebecca Sramkova, Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo, and Croatians Petra Martic and Antonia Ruzic.
